Paramus, NJ - October 23, 2003 ― Has the economy and life been getting you down lately? Are you looking for a little uplifting humor and someone with a unique perspective to brighten your evening with his candor and sharp wit? Then come join members of NJ Creatives (also known as the Self-Employed Writers and Artists' Network - S.W.A.N.) for what promises to be an unpredictable evening of fun. Columnist and feature writer for "The Record," Bill Ervolino, will share his insights about life and his experiences as an award-winning writer on Wednesday, November 12, 2003, at NJ Creatives' meeting held at the Bergen Museum of Art and Science, which is located on the lower level of the Bergen Mall. Ervolino joined "The Record" back in 1990. The author of Some Kind of Wiseguy: Stories about Parents, Weddings, Modern Living and Growing Up Italian, he is also the co-author of The Backstage Handbook for the Performing Arts. Along with Gay Talese and others, he is one of the contributors to an upcoming book about Italians in New Jersey being published by Rutgers University Press. He also does stand-up comedy, and is honorary chairman and emcee of the annual Laugh-Off at Gilda's Club, Northern New Jersey. He has performed in New Jersey at Bananas, and in New York City at the Duplex, as well as at the Boston Comedy Club as part of the Toyota Comedy Festival. A two-time recipient of the Silurian's medal for his column, Ervolino has also received numerous awards from the New Jersey Press Association and the Society of Professional Journalists for feature writing, medical reporting and criticism. He was twice named a finalist in the Penney-Missouri feature writing competition, and in 2001 and 2002, his "Record" column was recognized by the National Society of Newspaper Columnists as being one of the best humor columns in the United States. Well known for his column, Ervolino writes on topics ranging from the very personal, involving friends, family and even his dog, to an array of current media topics, from the very serious to the ridiculous. Guaranteed to generate some smiles and laughter, Bill will offer his unique and often hilarious views on life and his varied experiences as a writer for a major daily newspaper. The meeting will be held at the Bergen Museum of Art and Science, Bergen Mall, lower level. Networking begins at 7:15 p.m. and the meeting and program begin at 7:45 p.m. Admission is free for members and $10 at the door for guests. Begun in 1984 by three freelance professionals who wanted to exchange ideas and referrals, NJ Creatives (also known as the Self-employed Writers and Artists' Network - S.W.A.N.) has grown into a successful non-profit, dues-paying organization that boasts a diverse and ever-increasing membership of talented professionals. Members include writers, designers of both print and web media, illustrators, photographers, video producers and public relations specialists.
